Owomoyela's book may be seen as an attempt to defend cultural heritage, in this case African, against the dominating tendencies of globalization. As long as Western knowledge and European languages dominate, the structures of colonialism remain. As a result, African people are at risk of being permanently oppressed in their own countries. In Owomoyela's opinion these structures of dependence originate in the cultural and intellectual field, a point which requires further discussion. His explanations focus on the following issues: a revival of African values and institutions, a criticism of modern African philosophy, a proposal of "re-Africanization" and the status of women. Unfortunately, Owomoyela is only partially convincing in his thesis. Thus his book, which is well worth reading, provides plenty of material for discussion.
