This volume contains the contributions of African and European philosophers attending conferences on African philosophy at the University of Vienna and the Erasmus University of Rotterdam, in October 1993. The Vienna conference was devoted to a number of general problems relating to postcolonial philosophizing in Africa, such as the relation between the oral and the written (H. Kimmerle), the connections between culture, nationalism and philosophy (S. B. Oluwole) and the need for decolonization of philosophical terminology (K. Wiredu). The focus of the Rotterdam conference was the discussion of various concepts of democracy and the question of their appropriateness as solutions to the pressing problems of African countries. In this context, critical questions focused on western systems of multi-party democracy (M. P. Eboh, F.U. Uyanne), and on indigenous political practices (M. Diallo and G.J. Wanjohi) with which modern processes of democratisation might be fruitfully linked. |
