Segun Gbadegesin, professor of philosophy at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Nigeria, begins his explanations with two basic assumptions:
1. Philosophy as an academic branch must gain some relevance for today's reality if it is to be meaningful for Africa in any respect.
2. The importance of the cultural dimensions of philosophical discourse are not to be ignored.
The actual situation of the continent is characterised by a strong attachment to "tradition" as well as by the ever increasing influx of the modern world. Gbadegesin approaches the problems of contemporary Africa with attention to both influences. He utilises the cultural tradition as a fruitful resource for possible solutions, taking a critically reflective and unromantic stance towards traditional thinking. At the same time he formulates a critique, using political, social and economic categories of analysis. In support of this structure, his book consists of two parts: I. Traditional Yoruba Philosophy, and II. Contemporary African Realities.
